Carmelite Sisters to close Avila Gardens

Duarte, California July 14, 2020

The Carmelite Sisters announced on Tuesday that the last day of operations at Avila Gardens will be November 1, 2020. This decision comes after a lengthy period of prayer, internal and external consultation and a very thorough discernment process.

Avila Gardens is licensed for 40 residents and is currently home to 21 independent seniors, aged 72 to 103. Historically, Avila Gardens has not been able to reach the needed occupancy to sustain itself. Occupancy will continue to decline as residents age and move to alternate locations. While blessed with no Covid 19 cases during the recent outbreak, the decision has been made to close Avila Gardens while census is low.

Over the past year, the Carmelite Sisters have engaged in a discernment process aimed at strengthening their areas of service and the quality of their religious and community life. The sisters serve in healthcare, education and retreat work at twelve different sites across the country. The requirements of multiple apostolic locations, in terms of Sisters obligations and needed capital, have led them to recognize the need to reduce locations. This is in alignment with the Sisters commitment to live in purposeful community.

The well-being of the residents and staff at Avila Gardens are the Sisters’ top priority. They are committed to walking with each resident and providing the assistance and support needed as they research and move into a new home. Each employee will also be assisted in their transition.

It is with a grateful and yet heavy heart that the Sisters thank God for the opportunity to have served these last 20 years in this portion of the Lord’s vineyard.
